Pop retired from LADOTD after many years of service in various capacities. Post-retirement, he continued to work in the private-sector engineering field until he was 76 years old. He made many fond memories and good friends during his career. Prior to his career, he proudly served his country in the US Army, completing a tour of Vietnam as part of the 3rd Radio Research Unit, a detachment of the Army Security Agency. He made many lifelong friendships during his time serving in the Army.
Pop enjoyed hunting, golf, canoeing/kayaking, and many other outdoor activities. He enjoyed LSU sports and attended many LSU sporting events alongside his wife, Debi, who survived him in addition to his only son, Deion A. Banta (Baylee), and a caring niece Paula Broussard Gebhart (Mike). Pop was also survived by a sister, Maureen Banta Lewis (Fred), her two children Matthew Lewis & Elizabeth Lewis Deal (Jesse) and great niece Eliana Deal, niece Holly Bourgeois, and great nieces Amber & Katy. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved stepmother, Sylvia Gates Banta.
Pop and his family will be forever grateful to his caregiver, Nancy Keller (Caring Angels). No one ever thought that anyone could tame him, but Nancy came dang close :-). His family is also forever grateful to LaShae, Terri, and Jatana of Fidelis King Richard Residential Care Home for their outstanding care and love.
Pop will be laid to rest at the Louisiana National Cemetery in Zachary, LA in a private memorial service with full military honors.
Ron and I were friends since we met at FT. Devens prior to going to Viet Nam together. His nickname in the ASA at the 3rd RRU was “pandabear”. I consider him to be one of my best and truest friends. We kept in touch throughout these years and got together a few times. In Viet Nam we had a lot of fun together with our other friend Al Dubuc. Debbie and Dion kept me advised of his situation and may God bless them both. I will miss “pandabear” . He was one of a kind!! The best!! Gary and Marge Knapik
